Houston-Sugar-Land Texas Retaining walls
A retaining wall is a structure that holds back earth.
Retaining walls stabilize soil and rock from down slope movement or erosion and
provide support for vertical or near-vertical grade changes. Cofferdams and
bulkheads, structures to hold back water, are sometimes also considered
retaining walls. Retaining walls are generally made of masonry, stone, brick,
concrete, steel or timber. Once popular as an inexpensive retaining material,
railroad ties have fallen out of favor due to environmental concerns.
The most important consideration in proper design and installation of retaining
walls is that the retained material is attempting to move forward and down slope
due to gravity. This creates a soil pressure behind the wall (depending on the
angle of internal friction (phi) and the cohesive strength (c) of the material).
This pressure is smallest at the top and increases toward the bottom and will
push the wall forward or overturn it if nor properly addressed. Also any
groundwater behind the wall that is not dissipated by a drainage system causes
an additional horizontal hydraulic pressure on the wall.
Houston-Sugar-Land Texas Gravity Walls

A gravity retaining wall is usually a low height (less than 3 to 4 feet) wall
which depends on its own weight or mass to hold back the earth behind it. This
goal is achieved by constructing the wall with a volume of material so that when
stacked together, the weight and friction of the interlocking material exceeds
the forces of the earth behind it. The wall is thicker at the base than at the
top. Also, note that as the front of the wall gets taller it slants backwards.
This is often referred to as 'battering'.
This battering effect creates a visual message of strength, as over time, the
wall will probably succumb to the forces of gravity and begin to tilt outward.
By battering the wall backwards, you extend the visual life of the wall.
Retaining walls that appear to be tipping over, tend to indicate faulty
construction and impending failure.
Walls that are battered send a visual message that the wall is 'working' and
that it is continuing to beat the force of gravity. Gravity walls become very
cumbersome to construct as they get higher, because they require vast quantities
of materials. The thickness of a gravity wall at its base should be one half to
three fourths its height. So, if you intend to build a wall 4 feet high, the
base should be 2 to 3 feet wide. As the wall gets higher, it begins to get
thinner.
Houston-Sugar-Land Texas Cantilever
Walls

A cantilever retaining wall is one that consists of a uniform thickness wall
which is tied to a footing. A cantilever wall usually is asked to hold back a
significant amount of earth, so it is a good practice to have these walls
engineered. A simple example of a cantilever retaining wall is a typical
basement wall of a house.
The width of the footing for a cantilever wall is very important. The footing is
designed to resist tipping or sliding forces which the earth exerts upon the
wall. Also, the wide area of the footer allows the weight of the earth to
actually keep the wall from tipping in some instances.
These walls require significant steel reinforcing in both the footer and the
wall structures. The steel also has to extend from within the footer up into the
wall so that the two pieces actually become one integral unit. As you can see,
this is why these walls need to be designed by structural engineers. If you try
to guess yourself at the amount, size and placement of structural steel in this
type of wall, you are gambling.
Also, the thickness of both the footer and the wall is extremely critical. Don't
be a fool and try to become a weekend engineer. Spend several hundred dollars
and get it right the first time!
Houston-Sugar-Land Texas
Counterfort Retaining Walls

A counterfort retaining wall is very similar to a cantilever wall, except that
it has one additional feature. This wall has a triangular shaped wall which
connects the top of the wall to the back of the footer. This added support wall
is hidden within the earthen or gravel backfill of the wall. The footer,
retaining wall and support wall must be tied to one another with reinforcing
steel.
If the structure is poured concrete
, often the retaining wall section and the support walls are poured as one unit
at the same time. The support walls add a great deal of strength to the
retaining wall. The supports make it virtually impossible for the wall to become
detached from the footer. As with cantilever walls, a counterfort wall should be
designed by a competent structural engineer.
If you decide to attempt to construct this type of wall without approved plans,
you are making a huge mistake. If the wall fails, the cost to remove the failed
wall, construct the new one, etc. could be ten times or one hundred or more
times the cost of engineering services. Remember, engineers have to eat just
like you and me!
Houston-Sugar-Land Texas
Buttressed Retaining Walls

A buttressed retaining wall is basically identical to a counterfort wall except
for one thing. The support wall is on the outside of the retaining wall. They
are visible. The buttresses add incredible strength to the wall system. For the
retaining wall to fail or tip over, the buttresses would have to be crushed. The
buttress concept was widely used in the construction of many cathedrals in
Europe.
Because of the height of the cathedral walls, the buttresses helped to stabilize
them. They do the exact same thing in a retaining wall. Once again, if you
intend to build one of these walls, you must give serious consideration to
hiring an engineer. Situations which demand this type of wall usually have
tremendous loads which bear against the walls. The buttresses can often be
designed to be decorative in nature and covered with stone or some other
material. Depending upon the overall length of the wall, you may have several
buttresses. They can be spaced to create rooms, parking spaces, handball courts
or any other functional space. Use your imagination!
Proper drainage behind the wall is
critical to the performance or retaining walls. Drainage materials will reduce
or eliminate the hydraulic pressure and increase the stability of the fill
material behind the wall (assuming of course, that this is not a retaining wall
for water...).
RETAINING WALL COMPONENTS
Foundation System
Retaining walls can be provided with a variety of different foundation support systems depending upon the soil conditions and local topography. The geologist and soils engineer must evaluate site conditions and provide the structural engineer with a recommendation of the foundation system to use and the bearing material which is to provide support for the foundation system.
Conventional Foundations - The most common form of support of retaining walls is conventional footings. The geologist and soils engineer must determine the foundation bearing material and the minimum depth of embedment. The structural engineer will determine the actual depth of embedment and the width of the footing needed to support the wall. A keyway is also sometimes employed in a conventional retaining wall foundation.
Deepened Foundations - Deepened foundations, consisting of either friction piles or caissons are commonly used to support hillside retaining walls. Deepened foundations are necessary when retaining walls are located over or near descending slopes or when necessary to penetrate deep unsuitable earth materials. Deepened foundations are also sometimes used to avoid surcharging lower walls or structures.
Tie Back Anchors - Tie back anchors are sometimes employed to resist lateral forces imposed on retaining walls. Tie back anchors are drilled at an angle into the slope and spaced at pre-determined intervals. Tie back anchors are commonly used in construction of temporary shoring for high excavations. The Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety does not allow the use of tie back anchors in the permanent design and construction of retaining walls.
Subdrainage System
Several methods can be utilized to prevent the building up of hydrostatic (water) pressure behind the retaining wall. Water pressure will exert 62.4 pounds per cubic foot of pressure on a retaining wall. Typical retaining wall designs employ a 30 to 43 pound per cubic foot equivalent fluid pressure. If water pressure is allowed to develop behind the wall, most walls will experience rotation or failure. To prevent this condition from developing, several methods can be employed which include weepholes, open headers in concrete block and subdrains.
Subdrains:
Subdrains are a commonly used
method of providing subsurface drainage control behind retaining walls. A
subdrain typically consists of a 4-inch diameter perforated PVC pipe. The
subdrain pipe must conform with ASTM standards. Flexible subdrain pipe is
normally not used due to its susceptibility to crushing when the wall backfill
is placed. The approved subdrain pipe is laid on a bed of 3/4 inch gravel
at the base of the retaining wall. The subdrain pipe is placed with the
perforations pointing down, allowing the small trough at the bottom of the pipe
to conduct drainage. The perforated pipe is connected to solid drain pipe
which discharges to an approved location (street).
Weepholes:
A commonly employed method to allow subsurface water to drain through the retaining wall is the use of weepholes. This image shows 3-inch diameter weepholes installed into the base of the retaining wall. Weepholes can be installed at the time of wall construction or can be provided later.
Open Headers:
When retaining walls are constructed from concrete blocks, the bottom course of block can have the joints between the blocks left ungrouted. This allows drainage to seep through the open grout spaces, often referred as "open headers". Open headers are considered to be less effective than conventional weepholes or subdrains.
Filter Fabrics:
In some applications, use of
conventional subdrain systems is not possible. MiraDrain Company offers a
variety of filter fabrics which can be used to provide some degree of drainage
behind retaining walls which have not been provided with enough free space
behind the wall to employ a standard drainage system. Filter fabrics are
not as effective as conventional subdrains and weepholes, but in special
circumstances, filter fabrics represent an alternative which can provide some
degree of protection.
Drainage Media:
Retaining walls must be properly backfilled. The backfill material must be selected and approved by the geologist or soils engineer. Typically, the subdrain pipe or weepholes must be covered with a minimum of 12 cubic inches of 3/4 gravel to allow free drainage to the subdrain pipe and to help prevent clogging of the pipe with finer drained silt and clay particles. The remaining height of wall is typically backfilled with compacted fill. Compaction testing must be performed on the wall backfill to ensure the require degree of compaction. In some circumstances, gravel is placed the entire height behind the wall to within 2 feet of the top of the wall to provide better drainage conditions. The upper 2 feet must consist of a compacted fill blanket to reduce surface drainage infiltration into the wall backfill.
Waterproofing
This exterior concrete block retaining wall has been constructed at the base of a compacted fill slope and has not been provided with waterproofing. As a result, a significant amount of moisture penetration has occurred through the face of the wall.
Surface Drainage System
This picture illustrates several surface drainage control features of a typical retaining wall constructed at the base of an ascending slope. The wall has been provided with a concrete drainage swale or "V" drain, to intercept upslope drainage. The drainage swale is designed to collect and discharge slope drainage to an approved location, usually the street or storm drain system. The retaining wall has also been provided with freeboard, which is the portion of the wall which extends above the drainage swale. The purpose of freeboard is to prevent upslope drainage and debris from overtopping the wall. The height of freeboard is determined by the geologist, but typically is 2 feet.

Introduction to
Houston-Sugar-Land , Texas
Incorporated in 1837, Houston-Sugar-Land is the fourth largest city in the United
States with a population of approximately 2 million people. The population
of the greater Houston-Sugar-Land metropolitan area is approximately 5 million people.
Houston-Sugar-Land is located in eastern Texas, on Sugar-Land Bay, near the Texas Gulf
Coast. It is approximately two hours from the Texas/Louisiana border. It is
unofficially nicknamed the "Bayou City" because of four bayous that run
through the city. Houston-Sugar-Land 's official nickname is "Space City" since it is
home to NASA's Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center, where Mission Control is
located.
The port of Houston-Sugar-Land is one of the ten busiest ports in the world and one of
the busiest ports in the United States. Houston-Sugar-Land is well known for its energy
(oil) and aeronautics industries and is home to the world-renowned Texas
Medical Center.
Houston-Sugar-Land is ranked as the 32nd "Most Fun U.S City" in a survey conducted in
2003 by Cranium Inc. Factors taken into account in the ranking include: the
number of sports teams, restaurants, dance performances, toy stores, the
amount of a city's budget that is spent on recreation, and other factors.
Houston-Sugar-Land History
Houston-Sugar-Land was founded by two New York real estate promoters, John Kirby Allen
and Augustus Chapman Allen, who purchased the land in 1836 and founded a
town named after Sam Houston-Sugar-Land . The city was incorporated in 1837 and was the
capital of the Republic of Texas until early 1839, when the capital was
moved to Austin.
Some key dates in Houston-Sugar-Land 's history include:
•In 1861, Harris and all of the surrounding counties voted to secede from
the Union and join the Confederacy in the Civil War. Not all Texas counties
followed suit.
•In 1901, a major oil discovery was made at Spindletop, near Beaumont,
giving birth to the oil industry in southeast Texas and Houston-Sugar-Land .
•In 1914, the
Houston-Sugar-Land Ship Channel was constructed along the course of
Buffalo Bayou.
•In 1961, the Johnson Space Center was established at Clear Lake south of
Houston-Sugar-Land .
•In 1965, the Harris County Domed Stadium, later called the
Houston-Sugar-Land Astrodome, was completed.
